TORONTO (AP) — NHL players are returning to the Olympics for the first time in more than a decade. The world's top hockey league will allow its players to participate in the Games in 2026 in Milan and in 2030 under an agreement announced Friday by the NHL, the NHL Players’ Association, International Ice Hockey Federation and the IOC. NHL players have not been at the Olympics since 2014 in Sochi. "There is a recognition of how important this is to the players," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at a news conference during All-Star Weekend. “Extremely badly want to play in the Olympics,” McDavid said Thursday.

The highest court in sports sanctioned Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for doping violations at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The ruling set the stage for U.S. skaters to receive gold medals after they finished second behind Valieva and her teammates in the team competition. When Valieva's case first erupted, the IOC decided not to award medals from the event while the skaters were in Beijing. But what the Valieva case exposed was the fact that, even 10 years after Sochi, things are still not back to "normal” in Russia.

At major lacrosse events, a team of Native Americans called the Haudenosaunee plays alongside countries like the United States, Canada and Australia. Now lacrosse has achieved an international breakthrough by being added to the Olympics for the Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028. And both the United States and Canada already have lacrosse teams of their own. Although lacrosse officials seemed eager to find a way to get the team to the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee, which will have the final say, had discouraging words, at least for now. It said the United States and Canada would be able to include athletes from the Haudenosaunee in their respective teams.

Poland, which hosted the multi-sports European Games this summer in Krakow and Malopolska, has never hosted an Olympic Games, summer or winter. The International Olympic Committee has awarded the 2032 Games to Brisbane, while there are already several interested potential candidates for the 2036 Games. "From everything the EOC saw there, Poland is well qualified to host the Olympic Games too," Arat said. The IOC usually awards the summer Olympics at least seven years in advance. Paris will host next year's summer Games while Los Angeles will stage the 2028 Games.

Kharlan’s disqualification threw into sharp relief the political and organizational jeopardy that France and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is facing ahead of the Games. So far, no decision has been taken on Russian and Belarusian athletes’ participation at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The opening ceremony is already uniquely French in nature with the Games set to be centered around the Seine, the river running through the city. Organizers also say that the Paris Games “finance themselves,” claiming that 96% of the budget comes from private investment. Next year’s Olympic Games are set to start on July 26 and run until August 11.

July 19 (Reuters) - Russian and Belarusian gymnasts will be allowed to compete as "individual neutral athletes" at events organised by the governing body from next January, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said on Wednesday. The FIG Executive Committee (EC) decided that Russian and Belarusian gymnasts may compete as long as they are not associated with their countries' gymnastics federations, their national federations and Olympic committees. "Any athlete wishing to obtain the status of 'individual neutral athlete' will have to apply to the FIG in accordance with the ad-hoc rules," FIG said in a statement. "Athletes who are granted this status will be eligible to participate in FIG sanctioned events from 1 January 2024." FIG President Morinari Watanabe added: "By accepting Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to participate in competitions as independent neutral athletes, the FIG is ensuring that the rights of all athletes are respected and is sending a message to the world that gymnastics is seeking peace."

CNN —The 2023 World Beach Games, scheduled to take place in Bali next month, have been canceled after hosts Indonesia suddenly withdrew from the tournament. “It is with great surprise and extreme disappointment that ANOC has learnt that the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) has withdrawn from its commitment to host the ANOC World Beach Games and the ANOC General Assembly in August 2023,” ANOC said in a statement Tuesday. Indonesia’s withdrawal from the World Beach Games at such a late hour caught the organizing body off guard. “The situation is felt to be getting more difficult because several sponsors of the 2nd ANOC World Beach Games Bali 2023 have also announced their withdrawal,” Raja Sapta said. CNN has reached out to ANOC and the KOI for further comment on Indonesia’s withdrawal from the tournament.

June 26 (Reuters) - The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is unequivocal in its support of Ukraine but will listen to any International Olympic Committee (IOC) plan to have Russian and Belarusian athletes compete as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Games. With the Olympics just a little over a year away pressure is mounting on the IOC, sporting federations, national Olympic committees and governments to make a call on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes at the Paris Games. There are mounting concerns that if Russian athletes are cleared to compete in Paris, even as neutrals, it could spark a Ukraine-led boycott of the Games. "We've been quite measured and willing to give the IOC the opportunity to explore the possibility, understanding how Russian or Belarusian athletes who are neutral, truly neutral, could compete in international competition. That does not include the Paris Olympics with a separate decision still to be taken by the IOC.

LONDON, April 13 (Reuters) - A group of national federations including the United States and Britain announced a new boxing world body on Thursday in a breakaway move aimed at securing the troubled sport's Olympic future. Leaders of the Swiss-registered body, World Boxing, told a news conference that they would seek recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The group includes federations who have already announced boycotts of this year's men's and women's world championships organised by the Russian-led International Boxing Association (IBA). Amateur boxing's governing body defied IOC guidance and lifted a ban on Russian and Belarusian boxers competing under their flags last October. The United States tops the all-time Olympic boxing medal table with 50 golds and 117 medals, ahead of Cuba and with Britain third.
Feb 7 (Reuters) - The Nordic Olympic Committees wrote to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday to reiterate their opposition to Russian and Belarusian athletes being allowed to take part in international sports. The IOC said last month that athletes from Russia and Belarus might be allowed to earn slots for the Olympic Games in Paris next year through Asian qualifying. Tuesday's joint statement by the Nordic Olympic Committees, Paralympic Committees and sports confederations said they stood firm in their opposition to Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials being allowed to participate in international sports. "We, the Nordic Olympic and Paralympic Committees and Confederations of sports, take this opportunity to reaffirm our steadfast support once again with the Ukrainian people and the demand for peace," it said. Last week, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland called on international sports bodies to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in the Olympics and other events while the war in Ukraine continues.
VILNIUS, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Latvia would not send athletes to an Olympic Games that included Russian and Belarusian nationals while the invasion in Ukraine is ongoing, a spokesperson for the country's Olympic committee said on Wednesday. But the Paris Games is a year and half away. The Paris 2024 Olympics will be held from July 26-Aug. 11 and the Paralympics from Aug. 28-Sept. 8. Neither the Lithuanian nor Estonian National Olympic Committees are considering boycotts of Paris Olympics, their chairs told domestic media on Tuesday. Foreign ministers of the three countries and Poland on Tuesday agreed that Russian and Belarusian athletes in Olympics are "unacceptable" so long as the invasion continues, Latvian foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics said.
Latvia threatens Olympic boycott if Russians compete

The Latvian Olympic Committee is the first national Olympic body other than Ukraine which has threatened to boycott rather than compete against Russia. He broadened that position Wednesday by saying Latvia should boycott Olympic qualifying competitions, which are already under way in some sports, if Russians or Belarusians are allowed in. The Ukrainian National Olympic Committee has threatened to boycott and is due to hold talks Friday on the issue. Ukraine boycotted some sports competitions, including Olympic judo qualifiers, last year when Russians competed. Other national Olympic sports bodies, including the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, back the IOC efforts to find a path for Russians to compete.
Russian athletes could participate in Asian competitions - IOC

BERLIN, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Russian and Belarusian athletes could participate in Asian events with the International Olympic Committee looking at options for their return to international competitions. The IOC said on Wednesday the Olympic Council of Asia had offered Russian and Belarusian athletes the chance to compete in Asia. The IOC said in a statement it "welcomed and appreciated the offer from the Olympic Council of Asia to give these (Russian and Belarusian) athletes access to Asian competitions". That could potentially also include Olympic qualifying events, with Russian and Belarusian athletes unable to compete in Europe due to various restrictions and bans as well as opposition caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The IOC had recommended that events in Russia be cancelled or relocated and that Russian and Belarusian athletes not take part or compete under a neutral flag.
The International Olympic Committee’s about-face in seeking to allow Russian athletes’ participation at the 2024 Games in Paris has divided European countries, with some of the biggest Olympic committees of the continent remaining on the fence. IOC President Thomas Bach began openly pushing late last year for the reinstatement of Russian athletes, 10 months after the IOC had recommended Russian and Belarusian competitors be locked out of international sports over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia itself was already banned from international events because of its epic state-sponsored doping offenses at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but Russian athletes were allowed to compete in the last three Olympics under names like “Russian Olympic Committee.”
Former Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines and about two dozen demonstrators outside the NCAA convention Thursday protested the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports and threatened the association with legal action if it doesn’t change its policies. The topic has divided the U.S. for the past several years, with critics saying transgender athletes have an advantage over cisgender women in competition. Eighteen states have passed laws banning transgender athletes from participating in female school sports; a federal judge earlier this month ruled West Virginia’s ban is constitutional and can remain in place. The NCAA has permitted transgender athletes to compete since 2010. Harris said the transgender athletes policy is no different from other eligibility requirements.
Russia, Belarus allowed to attend ANOC General Assembly

Oct 18 (Reuters) - Delegations from Russia and Belarus will be permitted to attend the Association of National Olympic Committees' (ANOC) General Assembly, the organisation's Executive Council said in a statement on Tuesday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued guidance to sports governing bodies in February to remove Russian and Belarusian athletes from competition after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "The NOCs of Russia and Belarus are still recognised by the IOC and are therefore entitled to attend the ANOC General Assembly as any other recognised NOC," the statement read. The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) said on Monday it would not participate in the General Assembly, which runs from Wednesday to Friday in South Korean capital Seoul, if Russia and Belarus attended. The LOK and the NOCs of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway and Sweden appealed in a letter to acting ANOC president Robin Mitchell to reconsider the involvement of Russia and Belarus at the General Assembly.
